Christie Cassell
Shreveport, LA
Christie is a lifelong artist whose creative journey began in childhood, where early passions for sketching from black-and-white photographs, coloring, and painting with Prang watercolors laid the foundation for a rich artistic career. As a teenager, she was especially drawn to fashion advertisements, which influenced her developing sense of form and design.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Advertising Design from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. At the time, coursework emphasized traditional fine arts, providing her with a strong foundation in classical techniques.
Throughout her career, Christie has worked in a variety of mediums. While raising her children, she painted exclusively in watercolor before moving into pastel, where she gained recognition for her commissioned portraits of children. Today, her primary medium is oil, with pastel still playing a role in select works. Her current focus includes still life paintings—always created from direct observation—and commissioned pet portraits. She has also completed a compelling series of paintings featuring blues and jazz musicians.
Her work has been juried into numerous regional and local exhibitions and has received awards from organizations including the Hoover Watercolor Society, Louisiana Artists, Louisiana Watercolor Society, Creative Art Connection, Shreveport Pastel Society, and Associated Women in the Arts. Her paintings have also been featured in the Lynda Benglis/Michael Klein Visual Exhibition, Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council Annual Competition, Artport, Bloom, and the Northwest Louisiana Artists' Triennial Competition at the Meadows Museum of Art.
In 2008, her pastel portraits were featured in a solo exhibition at the Barnwell Garden and Art Center. Additionally, her watercolor painting Punkin was selected for inclusion in Splash 7: A Celebration of Light, part of North Light Books’ acclaimed Best of Watercolor series.
